Are Goldendoodles Good Family Dogs?

You might be wondering what kind of dog you should get for your family. There are so many options to choose from, and you don’t know which one will best suit you. You might have a list of things you want to have in a dog, but it will still be hard to find that “perfect” dog. Here are some reasons you should choose a Goldendoodle as your family dog.

Extremely Friendly

Goldendoodles are very social dogs and love to get to know everyone. They wouldn’t make a very good guard dog because they love everyone around them. They look like little teddy bears and act like them too. They are very energetic but will also snuggle up on the couch with you and cuddle. Goldendoodles are great with kids and other dogs. They will protect you and also love a good game of fetch.

No dog is entirely hypoallergenic, but Goldendoodles get pretty close. There is a chance your Goldendoodle could get their shedding habits from their Golden Retriever side, but it is more likely they will be like their non-shedding poodle parent. Even though Goldendoodles don’t shed, they still have to be groomed. Most Goldendoodles have a wavy coat, and if their fur isn’t brushed every day, it could get matted and be a real pain to deal with. You could also keep their hair short to avoid mats, but you will lose the teddy bear look you might have been going for. Goldendoodles don’t need to be bathed often. Maybe once every two months unless they get filthy.

Even though Goldendoodles wouldn’t make very good guard dogs, they still know when there is something wrong. They can tell when they should be on the alert. Goldendoodles are very easy to train because of their intelligence and the desire to please. Because Goldendoodles are so intelligent, they get bored quickly and need stimulation often. To remedy this, you could get something called a snuffle mat. A snuffle mat is a mat made of soft but sturdy material. This mat has different puzzles you can hide treats inside and have your dog find. This activity will stimulate their brain, occupying them for a while. You could also get them a chew toy with different textures. You need to ensure they have something to do while you are gone or busy, or this intelligence could turn into destructive behavior!

Ideal Service Dogs

Goldendoodles make fantastic service dogs. The Poodle’s intelligence and the Golden Retriever’s desire to please make a great mix, and this mix is very easy to train. Their willingness to please will make them try to figure out how to make you happy, and their intelligence will help them find a way to do just that. They will catch on to just about anything you try to teach them, even something as complex as being the eyes for the blind.

Great Therapy Dogs

Some may ask if Goldendoodles would be a good therapy dog for them or their child. The answer is yes. Goldendoodles are very kind-hearted and love to make their owner happy. They are brilliant and can even sense when something is going on. They get most of this compassion from their Golden Retriever side. Many Goldendoodles and Golden Retrievers have been used to help individuals with special needs, and it has helped a lot to have this dog by their side.
