Mechanical engineers design, develop, and apply new goods and technology. Engineers use their understanding of mathematics, physics, and engineering principles to solve challenges people encounter in the real world.

Mechanical engineering internships will teach you as an engineering intern to work on various tasks ranging from making robots, gadgets, and medical technological tools to creating new engines.

The overall objective of mechanical engineering internships is to teach you the key skills to be successful in this career.

    Overview of mechanical engineering internships

    Interns in a mechanical engineering internship are responsible for the following;

    • They analyse different technical tasks that involve creating new production methods or investing in new things.
    • They observe how factories run and try to boost their efficiency.
    • In a mechanical engineering internship, interns learn to create prototypes or new devices based on consumer or customer needs.
    • They compose summaries and study observations of how plants operate.
    • They help construct mechanical equipment such as engines or their parts.
    • They help carry out computer simulations of how some of the real-world processes work.
    • They carry out a series of tests on the physical characteristics of materials through different experimentation techniques.
    • In mechanical engineering internships, interns will learn to create charts and diagrams that can be used to solve real-life problems.

    Requirements for mechanical engineering internships

The following are the criteria required for a mechanical engineering intern.

Education. For most firms, a mechanical engineering intern must have a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a mechanical engineering-related field.

The most common majors for an intern include aerospace or aeronautical. Sometimes, industrial engineering also makes the list.

Training & experience. Most mechanical engineering internships are usually part of a university program that encompasses training in the form of what is known as a “practicum”.

Interns will be trained by a senior engineer or supervisor in the firm who will expose them to the on-the-job training aspect of the curriculum.

In mechanical engineering internships, interns will learn the basics and also receive instructions on all the safety procedures.

Certifications or licenses. Generally, mechanical interns do not require any certifications to become employed at most companies.

However, some mechanical engineering internships will reward their students with certificates at the end of the training period as they test their skills and gain additional knowledge.

Skills every intern needs to become successful

CAD & design software. Mechanical engineers and interns must know how to use computer-aided design software to not only create product designs but also modify them.

This why interns must possess the basic knowledge of the most common CAD software like AutoCAD and whatnot.

Communication skills. As an engineering intern, you may have to work with other interns and engineers or a team of other professionals in the firm.

When you know how to communicate effectively, you will communicate your ideas better, answer, and solve problems.

You can practice how to be effective in communication on your own in real-life situations or over the phone or email.

Problem-solving skills. As a mechanical engineer, you will always encounter different shades of problems in your work.

Having good problem-solving skills will help you surmount these challenges.
